Left Neglect Definition

Left neglect, also known as hemispatial neglect or unilateral spatial neglect, is a neuropsychological condition that occurs following damage to the right hemisphere of the brain, particularly the parietal lobe. This damage results in an impaired ability to attend to and perceive stimuli on the left side of space. Individuals with left neglect often fail to be aware of objects, sounds, and even their own body parts on the left side. It is most commonly associated with strokes or brain injuries.

Key characteristics of left neglect include:

Inattention to the left side: Patients may ignore food on the left side of their plate, fail to read words on the left side of a page, or neglect to groom the left side of their body.

Difficulty with spatial awareness: There may be challenges in navigating through space, often bumping into objects or walls on the left side.

Personal neglect: Patients might not acknowledge the presence of their left limbs, sometimes leading to the impression that they do not belong to them.

Treatment and rehabilitation for left neglect typically involve strategies to increase awareness of the left side, such as visual scanning training, prism adaptation therapy, and other occupational and physical therapy techniques aimed at improving attention and spatial awareness.

Improve your therapy and fitness equipment with our Left Neglect Red Straps. Enhance left-side awareness, support balanced recovery, and promote better rehabilitation outcomes.
